| Paris is undoubtedly a masterpiece of urban design. The magnificent arrangement of vistas, avenues, boulevards, roads and squares that makes Paris the most visited city in the world is largely due to the whims of royalty, and particularly to two men Napoleon I and Napoleon III’s Prefect, Baron Georges Eugène Haussmann. But Paris also has a history dating from the 3rd Century BC, and more great historic buildings than any other city, so you’ll need a guide if you want to see a max whatever the time available. If you only have a few hours, there are three possibilities for guided tours: 1) take one of the boat cruises along the Seine, leaving from the Pont de l’Alma, Pont d’Iena or Pont Neuf (Bateaux Parisiens: 01 44 11 33 55), or even a 'batobus' riverboat shuttle between the Eiffel Tower and City Hall, between March 30 and November 3 (01 44 11 33 99); 2) take a bus tour, either pre-arranged (Cityrama: 01 42 60 30 14) or open-roofed tourist buses allowing you to get on and off as you like (Les Cars Rouges: 01 53 95 39 53); 3) take a helicopter (Helifrance: 01 45 54 95 11, or IsaHelico on 06 12 71 34 78 / contact@isahelico.com). If you can spare more time the best is to stay a long weekend or more then you can take in several of our strolls, depending on your center of interest and whether your shoes are made for walking.
